Wildcats Blank Hoosiers to Advance to Big Ten Tournament Semifinal

5/10/2019 6:41:00 PM | Softball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northwestern opened its stay at the 2019 Big Ten Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the hosting Indiana Hoosiers on Friday.

The Wildcats advance to the semifinals for the second-consecutive season. They will face the No. 3 seed Minnesota tomorrow at approximately 10:30 a.m. CT.

First-year Danielle Williams improved to 28-5 on the season after tossing her 13th shutout of the season, tied for the most among all pitchers in the country. She also struck out nine and allowed just one hit before retiring the final 16 batters of the game. She faced just 21 batters, the minimum a pitcher can face in a seven-inning game.

Nikki Cuchran and Jordyn Rudd each turned in multi-hit efforts, going 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece. Both lead the team with 14 multi-hit games on the year.

As a team, the Wildcats were patient at the plate and walked eight times throughout the game. Lily Novak drew a career-high three walks in as many at bats on the game. Morgan Nelson drew two walks and extended her reached base streak to 26-straight games.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Cuchran came through with the first hit of the game for the Wildcats to put runners on first and second. Following a pitching change by the Hoosiers, Rudd knocked the first pitch she saw into center field for an RBI-single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Northwestern improves to 31-2 this season in games when it scores first.

The Wildcats added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth after Morgan Nelson led off the inning with her second walk of the game. After Maeve Nelson moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt, Nikki Cuchran got the job done with an RBI-single into left field to double the lead.

Northwestern's defense was up to the task the entire afternoon with a clean performance around the diamond. Skyler Shellmyer made an excellent catch in center early in the second inning, and the infield handled the litany of ground balls the Hoosiers put in play.

The Wildcats will have a rematch of last weekend's series, and the 2018 Big Ten Tournament Championship game, against Minnesota tomorrow. Last Friday, Northwestern took game one of the series in Minneapolis, 1-0, behind a shutout from Williams.

Tomorrow's contest will be televised live on BTN. Fans can follow @NUSBCats on Twitter for live updates.
