NAPA, Calif. — The 16th-ranked Northwestern women's golf program is peaking at the right time as it prepares for the Big Ten Championships in two weeks.
Led by junior Brooke Riley's medalist honors, the Wildcats won their first tournament of the season at the Silverado Showdown in a field that included No. 1 USC, No. 4 Stanford and No. 9 UCLA. The 'Cats finished with a 6-over, 870, besting the Trojans by four shots and the Cardinal by nine.
Riley entered the final round with a two-shot lead over teammate Stephanie Lau and despite shooting 3-over in the final round, earned her first collegiate victory with a 1-under, 215. Lau and first year Kelly Sim finished tied for fourth at 1-over, giving NU three in the top five.
A California native, Riley opened her day with two bogeys in her first three holes and was four over on the day through 14, but made a key birdie — her only of the day — on No. 15. The birdie proved to be the deciding factor in the tournament as Malia Nam of USC and Natasha Andrea Oon of San Jose State finished one shot back.

Lau was seeking her second-straight victory after winning the PING/ASU Invitational last week, but finished just two shots back of Riley for her second-straight top-5 finish. The Fullerton, California, native was tied for fifth in the field in par 3 scoring and tied for second in par 4 scoring. Sim shot a 2-over, 74, in the final round Monday to also finish two shots back of Riley to post her first career top-5 finish.
Senior Janet Mao and first year Kelly Su were pivotal in the 'Cats holding off USC Tuesday, posting the team's two lowest scores of the final round. Mao started her round on No. 3 and had three birdies in her first 10 holes before making a crucial birdie on No. 1 to shoot 1-under for the day. She finished tied for 29th in the tournament.
Su, who entered the day 12-over through 36 holes, shot a bogey-free back nine and had just two bogeys on the front to shoot a 2-over, 74.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will seek its fourth Big Ten Championship since 2013 when it takes on the field at the TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio, April 20-22.
