EVANSTON, Ill. – Danielle Williams earned her third-consecutive Big Ten Weekly Honors after being named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week following her performance this past weekend at Nebraska, the conference announced on Monday.
Williams was dominant once again as Northwestern collected its third-straight weekend sweep in Big Ten play to improve to 9-0 in the conference for the first time since 2009. The rookie southpaw went 2-0 and tossed two complete game shutouts against the Huskers, allowing just four combined hits in 14.0 scoreless innings while striking out 22.
On Friday, she allowed three hits and struck out 10 in the Wildcats' 8-0 victory over the Huskers. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and drove in the go-ahead RBI in the top of the fourth inning.
The Pleasanton, Calif. native turned in another gem on Sunday, as she surrendered just one hit and struck out 12 in the #B1GCats' 4-0 win in the weekend finale at Lincoln. After allowing a single in the first inning, Williams did not allow a hit for the rest of the game, marking the fourth time this season she has tossed a one-hit shutout. She also contributed at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a two out RBI-single in the fifth inning.
Williams has now tossed four-straight complete game shutouts, extending her season total to 10, the most in the Big Ten and second-most in the country. She has now tossed 33.0-consecutive scoreless innings in conference games and is 6-0 with 60 strikeouts and a 0.18 ERA (1 ER/39.0 IP) in seven Big Ten appearances this season. Her 19 wins, 178 strikeouts and 1.07 ERA (20 ER/131.1 IP) also lead the conference.
This marks the third time this season Williams has won Pitcher of the Week honors and the fourth time she has won Freshman of the Week, both the most by any player in the conference.
Northwestern is now 29-7 on the season, tied for its best start in the Kate Drohan era. The Wildcats have won 12 of their last 13 games and are riding a season-long seven-game winning streak. Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action this week with a pair of non-conference games vs. Notre Dame on Tuesday and at UIC on Wednesday before resuming conference play on Friday with a home series against Wisconsin.
