EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern used a strong pitching performance from Morgan Newport and Kenna Wilkey to secure a 5-1 victory over Loyola on Wednesday afternoon and extend their winning streak to four-straight games.
Newport started in the circle for the 'Cats and allowed only two hits in 3.0 innings of work. The junior now holds a 1.50 ERA (5 ER/23.1 IP) on the season after allowing just one run to the Ramblers.
Wilkey came in and was no more lenient to the Rambler hitters, allowing just one hit while striking out five. The sophomore's scoreless performance earned Wilkey the win, moving her to 6-2 on the season.
The Wildcats tied the scoring at one in the fourth inning on a single up the middle by Lily Novak that knocked in Morgan Nelson. Nelson had led off the frame with a single and been bunted over to second by Maeve Nelson before Novak's clutch two-out hit drove her in. Novak now has 13 RBI on the year and improved her season average to .278 (25-for-90).
Morgan Newport broke open the game in the fifth with a deep fly ball that cleared the bases after bouncing off a Rambler glove. The 'Cats had loaded the bags with a Skyler Shellmyer double, her fourth of the season, and back-to-back walks by Rachel Lewis and Morgan Nelson.
Jordyn Rudd added an RBI single to extend the Northwestern lead to four. Rudd now has a team-leading 31 RBI on the season.
Wilkey escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth with a crucial strikeout to end the threat. The Wildcats cruised from that point on to close out the game.
Northwestern has now won nine of its last ten games and is 26-7 on the season, its best start since 2007. They improve to 19-8 all-time against Loyola and have won five straight against the Ramblers.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will head to Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend for a series against the Cornhuskers. The first game is set for 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday.
