
'Cats Begin Big Ten Tournament Play on Friday

LINCOLN, Neb. — Northwestern begins its hunt for its 18th Big Ten tournament title on Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m. CT, when the Wildcats take on fourth-seeded Ohio State in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Northwestern earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament after a 7-4 mark in conference play. The Wildcats finished the regular season on a three-match win streak to go 14-9 overall and are ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA rankings.
Ohio State posted a 19-5 overall record this season with an 8-3 mark in league play. Northwestern upended Ohio State last weekend in Evanston in the form a 5-2 decision. The Wildcats claimed the doubles point in the contest and proceeded to pick up wins from Julie Byrne, Lee Or, Caroline Pozo and Hannah McColgan in singles play.
First year Clarissa Hand is ranked No. 40 in the latest ITA rankings. Hand went 7-4 against Big Ten opponents this season and claimed 11 singles wins at the No. 1 spot in her rookie campaign – the most wins of any Big Ten rookie at the No. 1 spot. She has six victories over opponents who are currently in the national rankings, including No. 2 Estele Perez-Somarriba (Miami FL).The Moorestown, N.J., native was the lone first year to win multiple Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Hand and teammate Or have linked up in doubles to go 7-2 against Big Ten opponents this season. The duo has played all of NU's league matches at the No. 1 position and are heading into postseason play with seven wins in their last 10 matches.
Or has been the Wildcats' most consistent player this season in Big Ten play. The senior went 8-2 against league opponents in singles play and has only suffered one set back in her last 10 matches.
Byrne paced NU with 17 singles victories this spring. She owns five wins over opponents who are currently ranked in the top-125 of ITA's rankings. The junior is 15-7 overall at the No. 2 spot and was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after going 6-0 in singles and doubles matches in the final week of the regular season to help NU cap the regular season on a three-match winning streak.
The winner of the Northwestern/Ohio State match will face the winner of No. 1 seed Michigan vs. No. 8 Michigan State/No. 9 Purdue on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT.
