'Cats Blank Buckeyes to Open Big Ten Tournament, 4-0

LINCOLN, Neb. — Fifth-seeded Northwestern shutout No. 4 seed Ohio State, 4-0, on Friday morning in the second round of the 2019 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament.

Northwestern advances to play top-seeded Michigan in the semifinals tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT. The win was NU's 15th of the season, which marks the 20th time that the Wildcats have claimed 15-or-more wins in a season during the Claire Pollard era (21 seasons).
The Wildcats took the doubles point on Friday thanks to wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan claimed a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Rheeya Doshi and Inci Ogut earned a 6-3 decision at No. 3 to give NU the early lead.
Clarissa Hand, who checked in at No. 40 in the latest ITA singles rankings, claimed a win over No. 55 Isabelle Boulais in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to give NU a 2-0 lead. Julie Byrne picked up her sixth straight singles win and sixth ranked-win of the season when she topped No. 93 Shiori Fukuda, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot.
Caroline Pozo nabbed the clincher for the 'Cats with a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 5.
The win was Northwestern second over Ohio State within a seven-day span. NU bested the Buckeyes, 5-2, last Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center. Northwestern has now won six matches over top-30 opponents this season: Miami (19), UCF (24), Ohio State (25) twice, LSU (28) and Illinois (30).
