EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 23 Northwestern opened a weekend series against Purdue with their 12th straight win and an 11-1 run-rule victory in five innings that was powered by the long-ball.
The Wildcats started the game with patience and power at the plate. After Purdue walked the bases loaded in the first inning, Morgan Newport came up to bat and worked a walk of her own, giving the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead.
Jordyn Rudd followed Newport and blasted a grand slam over the left field fence and into the side wall of Welsh-Ryan Arena, increasing the Wildcats lead to 5-0. Rudd now has a team-high 39 RBI on the season.
Rudd kept her hot streak going two innings later, leading off with a double to left field and then stealing third after a Newport walk. Pitcher Danielle Williams helped her own cause, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Rudd.
After a Rachel Lewis walk, Morgan Nelson stepped into the box with two outs. She worked a 3-1 count before crushing a line drive over the center field wall, her fifth homer of the season, to add three more runs to the Wildcats' lead. The 'Cats added two more in the fourth thanks to RBI-singles from Lily Novak and Mac Dunlap to bring around Eva Stees and Maegan Hollins, respectively, and extend the lead into double digits.
Williams threw four scoreless frames before eventually giving up one run in the 5th. She finished the abbreviated game with 12 strikeouts, her ninth double-digit strikeout effort of the season, and earned her 22nd win of the season while tossing her 19th complete game.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action Saturday afternoon against the Boilermakers, looking to stay undefeated in Big Ten play. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
