EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern's 19 varsity programs combined to earn an average team grade point average of 3.385 in the winter quarter, the Wildcats' highest average team GPA for an academic quarter on record.
The 3.385 average team GPA marks the 11th consecutive quarter that Northwestern's average team GPA was above a 3.30. Overall in the winter quarter, Northwestern student-athletes posted a 3.362 grade point average – the second highest mark on record for overall student-athlete GPA, trailing only the 3.366 that was achieved during the 2017 spring quarter.
The winter quarter saw 81.5% of NU's student-athletes achieve a grade point average above a 3.0, while 42 Wildcats earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
"The results earned in the classroom during the winter quarter reaffirm that our student-athletes, coaches and staff are committed to raising the standard of excellence in every aspect of the Northwestern student-athlete experience," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips. "We are privileged to have the best and the brightest young men and women in the country and their accomplishments in the classroom, as well as in the community and in competition, serve as a great source of pride for our entire University community."
Five teams turned in grade point averages above a 3.5, including women's tennis (3.615), women's golf (3.582), men's soccer (3.552), women's swimming and diving (3.545) and men's golf (3.54).
For only the second time since the inception of the Winter Academic All-Big Ten award, Northwestern surpassed the 50-recipient mark as 55 student-athletes across five varsity programs earned the recognition. Coupled with a school-record 118 Wildcats who received the Academic All-Big Ten laurels in the fall, Northwestern has now earned 173 total honors for the year. The Wildcats have accumulated 200-plus total Academic All-Big Ten awards eight consecutive years.
