EVANSTON, Ill. – Danielle Williams was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced on Monday.
This is the second-consecutive week Williams has earned Big Ten Weekly honors, having been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week last Monday.
Williams went 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP) in three appearances and two starts this week. This weekend at Iowa, she tossed two complete game shutouts on Friday and Sunday.
On Friday, she struck out 15 batters in a one-hit shutout against the Hawkeyes, tied for the second-most strikeouts in a single game by a Big Ten pitcher this season and the most by a Wildcat pitcher since Amy Letourneau did so on Feb. 16, 2013 against Campbell. At one point, she retired 14 consecutive batters while carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning.
The first-year from Pleasanton, Calif. also carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning on Sunday and allowed just two hits while striking out nine, including the final three batters of the game.
Williams is now 17-3 on the year, the second-most wins in the Big Ten and the most by any rookie pitcher in the nation. Her eight shutouts lead the Big Ten and rank second in the nation. She also leads all qualified pitchers in the Big Ten with a 1.19 ERA and ranks third in the conference with 156 strikeouts on the season.
This marks the second time this season Williams has won the conference's Pitcher of the Week honors, as she also won following the #B1GCats' opening weekend at the Titan Classic. She is one of just three pitchers in the conference to have taken home multiple Pitcher of the Week honors through eight weeks of action this series.
Northwestern is 25-7 on the season and has won eight of its last nine games, including starting 6-0 in conference play for the first time since 2015. The Wildcats will be back action this week on Wednesday, April 3 when they host Loyola Chicago at 4 p.m. CT before traveling to Nebraska for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 5.
