NORMAN, Okla. – Following a dramatic 2-1 extra-innings victory against Drake to open the weekend in Oklahoma, Northwestern was unable to keep the momentum rolling in its next game as they fell to No. 3 Oklahoma, 7-0, on Friday night.
The Wildcats are now 15-5 on the season, their best start since 2007. The Sooners improve to 17-2 on the year. The teams will rematch one another on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The 'Cats are back in action with two more tomorrow as they face off against Tulsa followed by Grand Canyon, who handed No. 1 Florida State its first loss of the season on Wednesday.
Northwestern got off to a good start in the top of the first inning as Maeve Nelson notched a two-out single to left field.
Kenna Wilkey took the circle and tossed two quick scoreless innings to start the game, retiring the first eight batters she faced. Oklahoma got on the board with two outs in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to center field.
The Sooners added to their lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning which included three long balls. Morgan Newport came in for relief in the fourth and allowed just one hit and one unearned run in 2.2 innings of work in her sixth pitching appearance of the season.
