Northwestern Ready to Meet Michigan State in Big Ten Tournament

3/5/2019 5:35:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will face Michigan State on Thursday, March 7, in the second round of the 2019 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament. The No. 8-seed Wildcats and No. 9-seed Spartans will tip-off at 11 a.m. CT on Big Ten Network at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The #B1GCats finished the regular season with a 16-13 overall and a 9-9 Big Ten record, marking their fifth winning season in the last six years.

Three Wildcats received All-Big Ten honors leading up to the tournament. Lindsey Pulliam was named consensus First Team All-Big Ten. Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah received a First Team All-Big Ten selection by the conference media and a Second Team nod by the coaches. Junior Bryana Hopkins was named a Sportsmanship Award Honoree.

Pulliam sits fourth in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game and has recorded 483 total points in her sophomore campaign. The Silver Spring, MD. native has put up double-digit points in all but one game in the 2018-19 season. Kunaiyi-Akpanah is ranked second in the Big Ten and fourth in the country with 143 offensive rebounds. The senior captain made history in February when she became the second Wildcat to pull in 1,000 career rebounds.

In the last meeting between the two teams, the Wildcats upset the then 15th-ranked Spartans on Jan. 3 in the new Welsh-Ryan Arena, 70-68. Northwestern ties for first in the Big Ten in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 60.9 points per game in conference play and sits second in steals thanks to first year guard, Veronica Burton. Burton leads both the Wildcats and the Big Ten with 58 steals on the season, averaging 2.4 per game.

Northwestern enters Thursday's contest having won four consecutive Big Ten Tournament openers. The 'Cats' longest tournament run was in their 2015-16 campaign when the team, seeded No. 12, upset the No. 5 and No. 4 seed to advance to the semifinals.

The winner of the second round will advance to the quarterfinals to play top-seed Maryland on Friday, the full bracket can be found here.
