ATLANTA — Northwestern and Georgia Tech split a double-header on the last day of their series on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets took the first game, 9-2, and Northwestern took the second, 5-1.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitchers' duel through six-and-a-half innings.
NU's started Quinn Lavelle went 7.0 innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter en route to collecting his first victory of the season.
Junior Nick Paciorek threw two innings of shutdown relief to seal the Wildcat victory, fanning four in his appearance.
Three Wildcats had multi-hit games, including Jack Dunn (2-for-5), Anthony Calarco (2-for-4), and Shawn Goosenberg (2-for-4).
The Yellow Jackets struck first with a run in the bottom half of the seventh. The 'Cats came back strong with a five-spot in the top of the eighth.
After a lead-off Jack Dunn single, a David Dunn single, and an Alex Erro walk, first-year Anthony Calarco was faced with a bases-loaded, no-out situation. The rookie prevailed, crushing a double down the left-field line to give NU a 2-1 advantage.
Fellow rookie Shawn Goosenberg followed that up with another double, extending NU's lead to 4-1.
Sophomore catcher ended the frame with an RBI single to give NU their eventual winning tally of 5-1.
GAME ONE
NU was limited offensively in the afternoon half of the double-dip, only scratching across two runs.
First-year infielder/outfielder Shawn Goosenberg was 2-for-4 in the contest. Five other 'Cats had hits in the contest, including senior infielder Jack Dunn, who was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Three 'Cats had extra-base hits in the set-back, including redshirt first-year David Dunn and senior Ben Dickey, who both walloped their second doubles of the season.
