The Wildcats will be making their first-ever trip to Kent in their 144-year history of intercollegiate competition.
DOING SOME RECON: The Golden Flashes just played in their home opener and won, 10-5, over Youngstown State on March 12 ... Kent State is led by sophomore Nick Elsen, who has hit at a .412 clip with a 1.118 slugging percentage over his last four games ... KSU's Friday night starter, Connor Wollersheim, despite his 0-3 record, has a strong 1.19 ERA ... The southpaw took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Kent State's first game at West Virginia ... THIS SEEMS GOOD: Northwestern's pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout on Tuesday in a mid-week, 9-0 win over MacMurray ... First-year Parker Hanks made his first-career start, tossing 5.0-shutout frames ... Fellow rookies Tommy D'Alise (3.0 IP) and Mike Doherty (1.0 IP) closed out the contest with no-hit innings.
THE BROTHERS ARE GETTING IT DUNN: Redshirt first-year David Dunn and senior Jack Dunn are third and sixth in the Big Ten in batting average, respectively ... David is hitting .365, while Jack is hitting .352 ... NU and Illinois are the only B1G teams with two players inside the top-six in batting average.
THIS AND THAT: Northwestern's team batting average of .256 is the fifth-best mark in the Big Ten ... NU has hit four triples, tied for the most in the Conference ... The 'Cats have drawn 58 walks, tied for fourth-best in the Conference ... NU has also swiped 23 bags, the tied for the second-most in the B1G ... NU's 16 strikeouts by their pitchers on the Feb. 22 game at Duke is tied for the most by a Big Ten team this season ... Northwestern's .971 fielding percentage (15 E/512 TC) is third-best in the Conference.
IRON SHARPENS IRON: Through the first two weeks of the season, Northwestern has the 11th-strongest strength of schedule in the nation.
NOT DUNN YET: Senior infielder Jack Dunn has started every game since coming to Evanston, a 174-game streak ... He has reached base in 36 of his last 37 games, dating back to last season ... His .446 on-base percentage is fifth-best in the Big Ten.
ROAD WARRIORS: NU has played 13 of their first 14 games on the road.
#HOMEGROWN: Anthony Calarco is second among all Big Ten first-years (min. 40 PA) with a 18.2 BB% (8 BB/44 PA) ... The Winnetka, Illinois, native has driven in six runs and has scored five times in 11 games.
MR. 305: Junior infielder Alex Erro hit .296 last year and, in 196 at-bats, only struck out 21 times ... That is 10.7 percent of the time ... In his career, he's only struck out 48 times in 487 at-bats (9.9 percent).
TAKE YOUR BASE: No Big Ten baseball player has been more effective at drawing walks this season than senior Willie Bourbon ... His total walks (14) lead the Conference, while his base on balls per game mark (1.00) is second ... Bourbon ranks 43rd in the nation with that 1.00 mark ... He owns a .433 on-base percentage, the sixth-best in the Big Ten.
WHAT A REVELATION: Junior righty Nick Paciorek, after converting from a catcher, has been a tremedous contributor for the Wildcats ... He has two saves in seven appearances, totalling 7.2 IP ... His 39.4 strikeout percentage is third-best in the Big Ten (min. 10 BF) ... He has been hot as of late, as 12 of his last 18 outs have been recorded via the punchout ... Opposing batters are hitting .148 against Paciorek.
QUINNIE THE POOH: Sophomore southpaw Quinn Lavelle has been a steady presence for the 'Cats ... He leads Northwestern with a 2.01 ERA (5 ER/22.1 IP), which is 10th in the Big Ten ... Thirty of his 67 outs have been recorded through ground balls (44.7 percent).
WHEN IT MATTERS MOST: Senior infielder Jack Dunn is hitting a team-best .563 (9-for-16) with runners in scoring position ... He also leads NU with a .467 clip with two outs (7-for-15) ... His six two-out RBI are second-best on the squad, trailing only Casey O'Laughlin's seven RBI.
THIS ONLY INTERESTS ME: In 50 at-bats (second-most on the team), Jack Dunn is the only Wildcat this season yet to strike out looking.
