IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team hits the road to compete in the 2019 Big Ten Championships hosted by the University of Iowa. The meet begins February 27 and concludes on March 2 with prelims and finals on each day of competition, except Wednesday. The first day of competition will include the finals of the 200 medley and 800 free relays.
Tyler Lis and Will Hofstadter were the top finishers for the 'Cats in 2018. Lis swam a career-best and placed in all three of his individual events (200 back, 200 IM, and 400 IM), earning three NCAA 'B' cut times along the way. He capped off his performance with a 14th place finish in the 200 back. Hofstadter finished with a career-best and 'B' cut time in the 100 breast, en route to a 10th place finish.
Returning scorers from last year's event include: Tyler Lis (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Back), Will Hofstadter (100 Breast, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free), Ryan Tate (400 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay), Liam Gately (200 Free, 1650 Free, 800 Free Relay), Keegan Bundy (200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay), DJ Hwang (1650 Free), Jack Thorne (200 Back), Justin Hanson (200 Fly), Peter Lewczyk (400 Free Relay, 800 Free Relay) and Arjun Sharma (200 Medley Relay).
Northwestern will also rely on its talented corps of first years that hope to carry over their success from the regular season. First year Ryan Gridley earned two of the Wildcats' five 'B' cut times on the season, coming in the 100 and 200 back. Manu Bacarizo claimed three first-place finishes in the 200 back, despite competing at just four meets. On the boards, first year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson has been the highest scoring Wildcat on the season, racking up five first-place finishes in the process.
The entire four-day event will be available via live stream on BTN Plus. BTN will air tape-delayed coverage of the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at 9:30 a.m. CT on March 3.
