HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Hosting the 57th iteration of the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Northwestern had six wrestlers earn a spot on the podium, headlined by redshirt first-year Michael DeAugustino placing second in the 125 lb division.
DeAugustino went 4-1 on the weekend and now sits at 11-3 on the season following a third place finish at the CKLV and his second place finish at the Midlands. The Palm Coast, Fla. native recorded back-to-back decision victories in his opening two bouts before taking a dramatic, 5-1 decision over the No. 4 seed Drew Hildebrandt (Central Michigan) in sudden victory to punch his ticket into the semifinals.
This marks the second season in a row a Wildcat earned a spot in the championships of the 125 lb division at the Midlands, with Sebastian Rivera winning the class in 2018 on his way to claiming the Dan Gable Outstanding Wrestler and Ken Kraft Champion of Champion awards. Rivera earned a spot in the podium in the 133 lb weight class, placing fourth this season. Rivera earned a major decision in his first three matches of the tournament before dropping a narrow 8-7 decision in the semifinals to No. 1 Seth Gross (Wisconsin) in the semifinals.
Also earning a spot on the podium for Northwestern was redshirt first-year Jack Jessen (184 lb.), who finished seventh, while Tyler Morland earned an eighth place finish of his own after going 4-3 on the tournament.
A pair of unattached Wildcat wrestlers also turned in impressive performances in their respective divisions, with first-year Chris Cannon taking seventh in the 125 lb division in his Midlands debut, while Colin Valdiviez (133 lb) also earned a seventh place finish. Both Valdiviez and Cannon were in the quarterfinals of their respective weight classes, making Northwestern the only school to send multiple wrestlers to quarterfinals in the 125 lb and 133 lb divisions.
As a team, Northwestern earned a ninth place finish with 70.5 combined team points. Iowa took home first for the eighth-consecutive season with a tournament record 196.5 points. For session-by-session notes and additional information on the tournament, check out the Championship Central page.
