EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten) heads on the road this weekend for the Big Ten Tournament hosted by Penn State. After capturing the three seed in the conference, the Wildcats will face off against sixth-seeded Rutgers in the quarterfinal round. The teams square off in the last match of the day, beginning at approximately 4 p.m. CT, with the action being streamed live by BTN Plus.
Thursday's contest is a rematch of an Oct. 13 matchup in Piscataway won by Northwestern, 4-1. The Wildcats dominated the contest, never trailing the Scarlet Knights. Bente Baekers opened the scoring with the first of her two goals for the game. Saar De Breij and Maren Seidel also added goals for the Wildcats.
The winner of Thursday's match faces either two-seeded Iowa or seventh-seeded Ohio State in Friday's second semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Central. Sunday's championship match is set for 1 p.m CT.
Coming into this contest, the Wildcats have won three of their past four games, and outscored their opponents 16-3 during this four game stretch. As a team, the Wildcats finished fifth in the nation in assists and tied for fourth in the nation in goals.
Kirsten Mansfield is currently tied for the nation's lead with 16 assists on the season, while Baekers ranks second in the country with 24 goals and third in total points (50). Baekers is the third player in the program's history to score more than 24 goals in a season, and her 24 goals is the most for any player in their first-year in Northwestern Field Hockey history.
Northwestern has played some of the premiere competition in the country, boasting seven wins over ranked opponents (four of which came on the road), along with two wins among teams ranked in the Top 12 in the nation in RPI (No. 7 Boston College and No. 12 Michigan).
The Wildcats are seeking their first Big Ten title since 2014 and their third of the decade.
