EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will host No. 16 DePaul on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena for Autism Awareness Day in a marquee matinee matchup.
The Northwestern's women's basketball team has a special connection with autism and since head coach Joe McKeown took over in 2008, the Wildcats have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the developmental disorder. One way to increase the knowledge of those in the Chicagoland area is to to host the annual Autism Awareness Game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. There will be a quiet room available in the arena as well as free t-shirts for the first 200 fans.
The Wildcats are 5-0 heading into Sunday's momentous clash with their crosstown rivals, who are 5-1. Head Coach Joe McKeown sits on 696 career wins and is 5-0 to start a season for the fifth time in his Northwestern tenure.
Northwestern is coming off a 73-44 victory over Colgate on Wednesday for the largest margin of victory this season. Junior Lindsey Pulliam led all scorers with 18 points on over 50% shooting from the field. Sophomore Courtney Shaw added 10 points and senior Abbie Wolf scored in double-digits for the fifth straight game to start the season.
NU boasts the best scoring defense in the conference and the sixth best in the country, allowing just 47.2 points per game. It presents a stylistic clash on Sunday as the Blue Demons are scoring the 12th most points per game in the country (91.0) and sinking the second most threes per game (12.0).
Sophomore Veronica Burton became the second fastest player in Northwestern history to eclipse the century mark in steals with five against Colgate, which brought her career total to 101. She ranks fifth in the country and first in the Big Ten with four steals per game.
The Wildcats last defeated DePaul in 2014 in a 97-91 double overtime win. The 'Cats have two ranked wins in the calendar year of 2019, knocking off No. 25 Indiana at Assembly Hall, 75-69 on Jan. 16, and No. 15 Michigan State at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Jan. 3.
DePaul comes into the contest at 5-1, with a notable win over No. 19 Miami. The Blue Demons' lone loss came against No. 7 Oregon State on the road.
