EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern used their suffocating defense along with an excellent performance by Abi Scheid to secure a 69-48 win over Valpo on Thursday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats pressured Valpo into tough situations all game, forcing 20 turnovers and holding the Crusaders to 34.8% from the field and 24% from deep. The 'Cats capitalized on the offensive end by turning their defense into 15 fastbreak points.
Scheid was on fire from everywhere on the court, hitting eight of her 11 shots including a career-high five three-pointers. The senior finished with 21 points and five rebounds in 30 minutes.
Veronica Burton, Abbie Wolf, and Byrdy Galernik all joined Scheid in double-digit scoring. Wolf notched a career-high three blocks and nearly recorded her second double-double of the season with nine rebounds.
Northwestern started the first quarter strong by scoring the game's first five points. Scheid tallied seven of her points in the opening frame, while Wolf grabbed four boards.
It was in the second quarter when the defense stepped up, holding Valpo to just three points and allowing the 'Cats to extend the lead. NU led 35-18 at the break, paced by Scheid's 13 points and Sydney Wood's balanced effort of four points, five rebounds and four assists.
The gameplan was the same in the second half for the Wildcats, meaning a stellar defensive showing and a barrage of buckets for Scheid. Veronica Burton, the Big Ten's leader in steals, jumped a pass at half court and drove in for an and-one. First-year Kayleigh Hartman also got in on the fun with her first career trey.
The #B1GCats have now held their opponents under 50 points in three of their four games and currently sit in second in the conference with just 48.0 points allowed per game.
Chicago's Big Ten Team continues their six-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Colgate at Welsh-Ryan Arena, with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
