MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Northwestern battled for a tough road win Thursday night at Marquette, prevailing in overtime, 64-56.
The Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season and dropped the previously undefeated Golden Eagles to 3-1.
Junior Lindsey Pulliam led Northwestern with 18 points, including the first eight points of the overtime period to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
Sophomore Veronica Burton came up with the crucial play of the game on a driving layup with 4.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 51-51. She finished with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Senior Abbie Wolf posted her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Her classmate Abi Scheid rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 11 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists. Both upperclassmen contributed to a 36-26 advantage with points in the paint.
The NU defense was stingy per usual, forcing 24 turnovers from the hosts, and holding them to just 17 points at halftime and five points in overtime.
The Wildcats continue their early non-conference road swing at Duke on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off at Cameron Indoor Stadium is set for 2 p.m. CT
