
Wildcats' Defense Keys Season Opening Win over Loyola Maryland

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern started their non-conference campaign by defeating Loyola-Maryland, 67-46, in Sunday afternoon's game at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats led for over 35 minutes of the game, and never gave up the lead after the first quarter.
Junior Lindsey Pulliam led the charge with an outstanding 25 points. Seniors Abbie Wolf and Abi Scheid finished with double digits. Wolf ended the game with 14 and Scheid with 10.
In the first half, the 'Cats outpaced the Greyhounds 30-18. Abi Scheid was the first half scoring leader with 8 points. Veronica Burton was an active distributor with 4 assists. Abbie Wolf could not be stopped near the rim defensively, finishing the half with 5 boards and 2 blocks.
Pulliam shone brightly in the second half, putting up 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting. She hit a pair of key threes to put the game completely out of reach. The senior would posted 3-for-5 on the night from deep.
Northwestern's defense was truly superb. The 'Cats forced 21 turnovers led by Veronica Burton and Abi Schied. Veronica Burton continued her defensive tear from last season finishing with four steals. Abi Scheid also collected 3 steals in the game.
The Wildcat defense stymied the Greyhounds, holding them to a 31.5% field goal percentage. The 'Cats held the Greyhounds to 18 points in the first half on 8-for-30 shooting.
Captains Lindsey Pulliam, Abi Scheid, and Veronica Burton started for the 'Cats, along with senior Abbie Wolf and junior Jordan Hamilton. 13 players saw playing time for the 'Cats including both first-years Laya Hartman and Kaylah Rainey.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will continue non-conference play on Thursday, Nov. 14 in Milwaukee, WI against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
