'Cats Drop Friday Night Contest to No. 4 Ohio State

10/18/2019 11:06:00 PM | Football

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern dropped a 52-3 decision to No. 4 Ohio State Friday night at Ryan Field in a rematch of the 2018 Big Ten Conference Championship game.

The loss moved the Wildcats to 1-5 on the campaign, while Ohio State improved to 7-0.

Ohio State opened the contest with a 10-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that finished with a 20-yard pass from Justin Fields to Chris Olave. The Wildcats chipped into the Buckeyes' lead when Charlie Kuhbander converted on a 33-yard field goal with 3:05 left in the first quarter to make it 7-3. The field goal was Kuhbander's 25th of his career and moved him to ninth all-time in program history.

The Buckeyes scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 31-3 lead at the break.

Senior defensive end Joe Gaziano forced a fumble in the fourth quarter. It was the 10th forced fumble of his career, and put him in a tie with Paddy Fisher for first atop the forced fumble list in program history. Gaziano picked up his 25.5 sack of his career, leaving him just 2.5 sacks shy of Casey Dailey's all-time program record (28).

Blake Gallagher led the 'Cats with 11 tackles and Greg Newsome II posted a career-high seven tackles, all solo, while also recording a pass break up. NU recorded three tackles for loss versus the Buckeyes. The Wildcats have notched three-or-more tackles for loss in their last five games.

Isaiah Bowser rushed for a team-high 65 yards on 16 carries.

Northwestern led OSU in time of possession, 32:33 – 25:00.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, to host Iowa in a Homecoming contest. Kick is set for 11 a.m. CT.
