'Cats Host Tri-Dual for Senior Weekend
1/31/2019 8:30:00 AM | Men's Swimming and Diving
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will host Minnesota and Purdue Friday and Saturday for a tri-dual as the 'Cats tune up before the Big Ten Championships. The meet will kick off Friday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m., and Saturday will begin with a senior day presentation starting at 11:45 a.m.
The last time the Wildcats swam at the Norris Aquatics Center, they rewrote the record books. The women broke seven pool records that day, with sophomore Calypso Sheridan swimming in five of the record-breaking performances.
Sheridan set the pool record in the 200 IM (1:56.64), 400 IM (4:08.76) and 200 back (1:54.11). She also teamed up with junior Malorie Han, sophomore Sophie Angus and first year Miriam Guevara to set the Norris pool records in the 200 (1:37.69) and 400 (3:34.89) medley relays.
The team of Han, junior Krystal Lara, junior Nicole Aarts and first year Jasmine Hellmer touched the wall in 3:19.72 during the 400 free relay, setting yet another pool record. First year Tara Vovk capped off the weekend by swimming a pool-record 200 breast in 2:10.67.
Both the men's and women's teams are coming off an impressive dual-meet victory at Cincinnati that saw a combined 19 event wins for the 'Cats.
Sheridan swept all three of her individual events: the 100 back, 200 back and 200 breast.
Northwestern's divers dominated on the boards, winning 60 of the 76 possible points. Senior Olivia Rosendahl swept the one and three meter events for the women, while first years Evan Labuda and Yohan Eskrick- Parkinson and senior Ben Magliato finished 1-2-3, respectively, in both events. Labuda's 282.85 on the one-meter springboard was also a seasons best.
Both the Golden Gophers and Boilermakers are returning to the pool after busy weekends. For Purdue, both the men's and women's team took on Indiana at home where they 106-188 on the men's side and 111.5-187.5 on the women's. Minnesota is returning from a trip out west for a tri-dual where the Gophers defeated Oregon State on the women's side and USC swept the meet for both the men and women.
Prior to Saturday's competition, the seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments with Northwestern. For the women: Lindsay Adamski, Alex Grimes, Annika Kollevoll, Janicia Ng, Olivia Rosendahl and Eryn Scannel. On the men's side: Justin Hanson, Will Hofstadter, Thanas Kountroubis, Tyler Lis, Ben Magliato, Arjun Sharma, Ryan Tate and Jack Thorne.
