Wildcats Take Down Tigers for First Dual Win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Northwestern men's tennis took down Auburn Sunday morning to pick up its first dual win of the young season. The 'Cats won the doubles point and three singles matches as they beat the Tigers 4-2.
The match got off to a perfect start for the visitors as both doubles sets to finish went NU's way. At No. 3, Trice Pickens and Antonioni Fasano curised to a 6-2 win over Tim Dollman and Filippo Mora. The point was clinched when the top Wildcat duo, Simen Bratholm and Nick Brookes, defeated Brandon Laubser and Tad Maclean, 6-4.
Brookes continued the momentum into singles play, where he was facing off with Laubser, who is ranked No. 77 nationally. Brookes took the first set in a tiebreaker and won the second as well to record a straight-set win, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. The victory doubled the advantage for Northwestern as it led 2-0.
Auburn was able to tie the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, setting the contest up for an exciting finish as all three remaining singles matches went to a third set.
Playing at No. 6, Pickens also won his first set via tiebreaker before dropping the second and heading to a third. The first year came through when it mattered, notching a 6-3 win in the third set to take the result and put NU one team point away from victory.
Chris Ephron made sure no more drama was required as he finished off a win at No. 5 to seal the match. In a tightly-contested battle with Dollman, the Wildcat pulled through with a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-5 victory.
Sunday's win marked the end of five consecutive away matches to start the season, as the Wildcats will return home for the next five. Next up is a doubleheader with Duke and Chicago State on Sunday, Feb. 3. The matches will start at noon and 5:30 p.m. respectively, and both will be held at the Combe Tennis Center.
