EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern women's fencing team is set to travel to the City of Brotherly Love for the Philadelphia Invitational this Sunday, January 20th.
The Wildcats come into the competition ranked No. 2 in the nation, the highest in program history, after College Fencing 360's first Coaches Poll of the season was announced on Friday. The ranking also marks Northwestern's highest since being No. 3 in 2010.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will face No. 3 Columbia, No. 10 Temple, Drew University, NYU, and Yale. There will be nine 5-point bouts per weapon, with three fencers from each school.
The Wildcats' record sits at 23-1 after an impressive sweep of the Western Invitational. NU defeated all seven opponents in a complete team effort, with the saber squad completing three 9-0 sweeps. Every competing NU fencer won at least four bouts, and eleven fencers won at least seven.
Sophomore Isabella Min paced all Northwestern fencers with 11 wins at the Western Invitational. Min's 23 wins on the year rank second on the team, behind Sofia Simontov's 24. First-year Natalie Kim, who picked up nine wins last weekend, ranks third on the team with 22 wins.
Last season, the 'Cats went 9-1 at the Philadelphia Invitational, including a 16-11 victory over then-No. 7 Temple.
