PITTSBURGH — Redshirt sophomore Ryan Deakin (157) earned his first-career All-America honor on Friday night.
Â
The plaudit was the second for the Wildcats of the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after redshirt sophomore Sebastian Rivera (125) won his semifinal bout earlier in the day.
Â
Deakin commanded his Round of 12 matchup with Lehigh's Ryan Humphreys, winning via 9-2 decision.
Â
The Colorado native picked up the first takedown of the bout 28 seconds into the affair and rode out his Lehigh foe for the remainder of the period, picking up 2:32 in riding time.
Â
Deakin struck again and took down Humphreys 24 seconds into the second period before being reversed. The Lehigh wrestler got hit with his second stalling call and the score was 5-2 at the end of the second period.
Â
The third period was all Deakin — an escape and a takedown — and, with the riding time advantage, he won, 9-2.
Â
The win marked the sixth time in the last nine years that Northwestern has picked up multiple All-America honors.
Â
Deakin wrestled a similarly-controlling bout against ODU's Larry Early later in the session, winning, 5-0.
Â
NU's grappler logged a takedown forty-seven seconds into the affair and rode Early out, causing his opponent to incur two stalling calls. Deakin's 3-0 lead was extended to 4-0 after a second-period escape.
Â
Despite both matmen neutral in the third period, no scoring was witnessed. With Deakin's riding time advantage point awarded, he finished with a victorious final score of 5-0.
Â
He will wrestle the 5-seed Hayden Hidlay of North Carolina State tomorrow morning. The winner will wrestle for third place, also in the morning session.
Â
Earlier in the session, Rivera fell, 8-2, to Virginia's Jack Mueller. Rivera will wrestle Princeton's Pat Glory, the seven seed tomorrow morning in the wrestlebacks. The winner will wrestle for third place.
