EVANSTON, Ill. — After knocking off the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class, redshirt sophomore Sebastian Rivera was named the Big Ten's wrestler of the week, the Conference announced Wednesday.
Â
En route to his first-ever Midlands championships, Rivera notched a 7-3 decision over Iowa's Spencer Lee, handing the top-ranked wrestler his first loss of the season.
Â
Rivera easily handled his other competition at the elite Northwestern-hosted tournament, notching four tech falls in his four other bouts. In all, he outscored his opposition, 85-16.
Â
The award is the first of Rivera's career and the first for Northwestern since Anthony Rubinetti earned the plaudits on December 13, 2016.
Â
Northwestern is back in action on Sunday, January 6, as the Wildcats compete in their first Big Ten dual against No. 11 Nebraska.
