Wood Wins Second B1G Freshman of the Week Award

EVANSTON, Ill. – First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Wood posted her seventh shutout of the season against No. 20 Penn State, making six saves and facing 16 shots in the 1-0 win. She kept a clean sheet for the 90 minutes of regulation against Ohio State and made six saves against the Buckeyes as well.

Wood earned her third weekly award of the season and her second Freshman of the Week award. She previously won both Goalkeeper of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week after her back-to-back shutouts against Iowa State and West Virginia.

The first year's seven shutouts are tied for third-most in the country and the most in the Big Ten. Wood's goals-against-average of .431 and save percentage of .891 are also both the best marks in the conference.

Wood joins senior defender Kayla Sharples, senior Brenna Lovera, and first year Julietta Thron as the other weekly honorees this season for the Wildcats. Wood is the first player in the conference this season to win any award in two separate weeks.

No Northwestern player in program history has ever won two Freshman of the Week awards in the same season, with the honor initially being awarded in 2009. Two different 'Cats – now-sophomores Madi Kennel and Kayleigh Stahlschmidt – won Freshman of the Week Awards in 2017.

Northwestern also improved four spots in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Poll to No. 17 in the country, as announced Tuesday. The 'Cats started the preseason poll unranked, and were as high as No. 12 after recording three straight wins over Missouri, Loyola Marymount and Bowling Green.

The #B1GCats are back in action this Friday for the final game of a three-game homestand welcoming Michigan to Martin Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
