EVANSTON, Ill. --Β No. 14 Northwestern swept the weekend with their second 2-0 shutout win in two days, taking down No. 25 California Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

First-year Maren Seidel scored the Wildcats' two goals late in the second half, with assists on both goals from senior Puck Pentenga.

The 'Cats improved to a 7-4 season record, while Cal falls to 3-4. This is Northwestern's fifth win over a ranked team this season.

Junior goalkeeper Annie Kalfas started in net, making four saves in the win. After this weekend's back-to-back shutouts, Kalfas now has a season record of 6-2, with six total career shutouts.

Pentenga remains the 'Cats scoring leader, adding two more points for a total of 20 on the season. Seidel leads the first-years in scoring, with a season total of five goals.

Northwestern now holds an 8-0 home record against the Golden Bears, with a 10-4-1 all-time advantage over Cal.

The first half stayed scoreless for Northwestern and Cal, with both teams struggling for possession. Green cards (5) almost equalled shots (7) in the first thirty-five minutes, as players fought to get some momentum going. The Golden Bears had a chance to take the lead off a penalty corner, but Kalfas threw herself across the goal, blocking the shot.

After 51 minutes of gameplay, the game's scoring duo of Pentenga and Seidel notched their first goal. On the 'Cats' fourth penalty corner of the game, Pentenga received the ball at the top of the circle, launching it on net. Seidel deflected the shot into the goal, scoring her fourth goal of the season and giving Pentenga her seventh assist.

Seven minutes later, and Pentenga and Seidel were at it again. Taking a pass to the middle from Pentenga, Seidel shot it straight past the goalkeeper. She fired it into goal right past the keeper's left side, doubling the Wildcats' lead to 2-0.

Despite the Golden Bears' push in the last two minutes with an extra attacker, Kalfas and the Northwestern defense kept it scoreless until the end. Their efforts held Cal to only seven shots throughout the game.

The Wildcats are back in action next weekend, as they travel to Michigan to take on Big Ten opponents Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Sunday. They return to Lakeside Field on October 5, where they will face another Big Ten foe, Ohio State.
