EVANSTON, Ill. β No. 14 Northwestern maintained its perfect start to conference play with a 2-0 win over No. 13 Iowa Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.Β

First year Maren Seidel scored the first goal for the Wildcats and sophomore Lakin BarryΒ scored the second, with both goals coming in the second half.Β

The #B1GCats improved to 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference, while dropping Iowa to 7-2 and 1-1 in the Big Ten.Β

Junior goalkeeper Annie Kalfas started in net and made two saves in the shutout. She improved her record to 5-2 this season and notched her fourth career shutout.Β

Senior Puck Pentenga assisted the first goal of the game for her sixth assist of the season, bringing her point total up to 18. Junior Lily Gandhi assisted the second goal for her first assist of the season.Β

Northwestern moved to 7-1 in its last eight meetings against the Hawkeyes, winning the last three matchups in a row.Β

The Wildcats started the match off strong and thought they had the lead five minutes in. Pentenga passed to Seidel and her shot rebounded off the keeper to Barry, who finished at close range. The goal was disallowed by the referees for an illegal foot touch, however, and the match remained scoreless.Β

NU had a number of penalty corners throughout the first half and early second half, but it took the seventh one to finally get on the scoresheet with 12 minutes to go. Pentenga received the ball on the corner and fired to her right, where Seidel deflected it into the net. The first year's third goal of the season gave the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.Β

The Wildcats doubled their lead less than six minutes later as Barry finally got her goal. Junior Saar de Breij was streaking down the right side and fired in a cross into the mix in front of the net. Gandhi got her stick on it first and her effort made its way to Barry, who slammed it in at the far post to make it 2-0.Β

The Northwestern defense was dominant again in the match, holding the Hawkeyes to just four shots, two shots on goal and three penalty corners.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Sunday with another ranked matchup against No. 25 Cal at Lakeside Field at noon.Β
