'Cats Set Scoreless Streak Record in Draw with Badgers

9/14/2018 10:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer

MADISON, Wis. – No. 12 Northwestern battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 22 Wisconsin on the road Friday night in the Big Ten opener after double overtime.

Senior Michele Chernesky scored the lone goal for the Wildcats on an assist from Brenna Lovera. The goal was Chernesky's first of the season and the fifth of her career.

The Wildcats maintained their unbeaten start to the season and improved their record to 6-0-2 through eight games. The unbeaten streak is the third-longest to start the season behind the marks of nine in 2016 and ten in 1998.

The 'Cats also made history by setting the longest scoreless streak in program history 47:09 minutes into the match, breaking the record of 658:58, set by Lauren Clem in 2016. When Wisconsin equalized in the 58th minute, the streak finished at 668:42.

Lovera added another point to her prolific season so far in 2018, bringing her totals up to four goals and two assists.

The 'Cats have drawn both of their ranked matchups this season, previously tying then-No. 25 West Virginia 0-0 in the second weekend of the season. They moved to 1-0-2 in overtimes as well.

In a cagey, chippy match between two rivals, Wisconsin had the first chance ten minutes in. A Northwestern corner kick was cleared by the Badgers and they produced a three-on-one on the counter attack. Dani Rhodes seemingly got in on goal, but goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood came off her line and imposed her will to make the save.

The 'Cats had a chance on their next corner, with Sharples rising up for a header, only to force a save from the Wisconsin keeper.

In the 35th minute, the Wildcats' expertise on set pieces paid off. Senior Marisa Viggiano lofted a free kick from 40 yards out into the box, and Lovera got her head on it first in the mass of players at the far post. Her header bounced to an open Chernesky who stabbed a finish into the net at close range to make it 1-0.

Wisconsin tied up the match in the 58th minute on a tough finish. Rhodes picked up the ball on the left side of the box, and seemingly in a crossing position, lofted a ball that arced over the entire defense into the far corner of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

There were few chances in the rest of regulation as both sides seemed destined for extra time. Both teams traded a shot apiece in the first overtime with Viggiano rasping one wide of the far post. In a match that ended as tightly contested as it started, there were no shots in the second overtime period.

Chicago's Big Ten Team continues its road trip on Sunday, when it travels to Minnesota for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
