EVANSTON, Ill. — Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald has announced seniors Clayton Thorson, Tommy Doles and Montre Hartage, and sophomore Paddy Fisher, will serve as the Wildcats' captains for the 2018 season.
Thorson becomes just the fifth two-time captain during Fitzgerald's tenure, while Doles, Hartage and Fisher will serve as team captains for the first time. The Wheaton, Illinois, native enters his senior campaign having started 39 consecutive games, tied for the longest active streak among FBS quarterbacks. A three-year starter, he is already the winningest quarterback in program history with 27 career wins and also holds the program record for career touchdown passes (44).
Hartage has been a staple of the Wildcats' secondary the last two season and enters 2018 having started each of the last 26 games over that span. He made a career-high 49 solo tackles last season and intercepted three passes, moving him into a tie for 10th in program history with eight total.
A consensus Third-Team All-Big Ten selection last season, Doles has started 26-straight games on the right side of the offensive line. Doles was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, given annually to the nation's top interior lineman. He entered the starting lineup at the beginning of the 2016 season and earned Honorable Mention All-BIg Ten honors as voted by the conference's coaches and media.
Fisher is the first sophomore to be named a captain during Fitzgerald's tenure. The Katy, Texas, native burst onto the scene last season by leading the Wildcats and all FBS first-year players with 113 tackles and 65 solo stops to earn Freshman All-American honors from the Football Writer's Association of America. He was named Second-Team All-Big Ten by the media and Third Team by the coaches in addition to earning Big Ten Freshman Defensive Player of the Year honors from the Big Ten Network.
Northwestern opens the 2018 campaign on Thursday, August 30 at Purdue in front of a national audience on ESPN. The Wildcats host their home opener on Saturday, September 8 when ACC foe Duke visits Ryan Field. Season ticket information is available at NUSports.com and by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
