Wildcats Earn Second-Straight AVCA Team Academic Award

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern volleyball earned a prestigious academic award on Monday, as the Wildcats were one of 164 Division-I programs who earned the AVCA Team Academic Award.
This is the second-straight such award for the Wildcats.
"Academics is one of the cornerstones of our program, and I am proud of all of our student-athletes who earned this award," said head coach Shane Davis. "Day-in and day-out, our volleyball players embrace the challenge of competing in the best conference in the nation. They also apply that same passion toward engaging with one of the best institutions in the world at Northwestern. It is also a credit to the incredible support system at Northwestern, including the Academic Services & Student Development staff, which inspires and enables all of our student-athletes to be as successful as possible off the court."
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The volleyball program is one of Northwestern's most consistent squads on the academic front. In May, it was announced that the team is among an elite group of 85 teams from around the country that have received the NCAA's Public Recognition Award in each of the 13 years of the program.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619-team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
Northwestern starts its season on August 24 against South Dakota in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
