EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's soccer head coach Michael Moynihan has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm in Evanston through the 2022 season, Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips announced Monday.
"Michael is the perfect fit to lead our women's soccer program for years to come," said Phillips. "He has built a championship-level program with a commitment to holistically developing world-class student-athletes. He is a tremendous mentor and recruiter, and his leadership extends beyond his program and into our entire department. Our student-athletes succeed at the highest level in the classroom, in the community and in competition, and we look forward to the continued advancement of Wildcats women's soccer under his guidance."
"I am so thankful to Dr. Phillips and President Schapiro for the support we have received and the opportunity to build on the success we have had at Northwestern," said Moynihan. "I also want to thank associate head coach David Nikolic, who has been by my side for 24 years, and assistant coach Paul Jennison, who has proved an excellent addition to our staff. This University has a steadfast commitment to helping both student-athletes and staff continue to grow and improve. The relationships that exist across campus are so valuable for our student-athletes and invigorating for our staff. I love the challenge of competing in one of the Nation's top athletic conferences as well as the opportunity to continue learning from some the top minds in the world in areas like leadership development, team management, and the use of sports science. Northwestern is a place that offers unparalleled opportunities for everyone in the Wildcats family. My family and I look forward to making Evanston our home for years to come."
Moynihan has led Northwestern to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, advancing past the first round each time, and captured the 2016 Big Ten regular season championship, the program's first-ever conference title. That 2016 team advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 while winning a program-record 16 matches. Most recently, the 2017 squad finished runner-up in the Big Ten regular season and tournament.
The Milwaukee, Wis. native is already the program's all-time winningest coach with 61 victories, including 42 in the past three seasons. In six seasons, Moynihan has led seven student-athletes to 10 All-Big Ten honors. His student-athletes have combined for 95 Academic All-Big Ten awards. He has coached four Scholar All-Americans and oversaw the development of goalkeeper Lauren Clem, who stands third on the NCAA's all-time shutout list with 49.
Moynihan holds a career record of 256-133-55, has led his teams to 12 NCAA tournament appearances, and has won 14 regular-season conference championships.
