'Cats Extend Winning Steak to Five Games

Northwestern (14-24) had a trio of players finish with three hits on the afternoon. Alex Erro went 3-for-5 at the dish with a RBI and run scored, Jack Claeys posted a 3-for-5 day with a stolen base and Charlie Maxwell went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth.
Leo Kaplan tallied his second home run of the season, a three-run blast that tied the ballgame at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh. Rookie catcher Jack Kelly also left the yard with his first-career home run coming in the bottom of the sixth on a solo shot over the right field wall.
Josh Levy pitched 1.1 innings and struck out three of the four batters he faced to pick up the win. He has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances.
Robert Gutierrez was credited with the loss after 1.1 innings of relief work. Chicago State dropped to 9-33 overall on the season.
Jack Dunn went 1-for-4 with a RBI. His single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
After Chicago State jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Northwestern answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a three-run spot. Kelly drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home NU's first run and Dunn followed with a sacrifice fly to right field in the ensuing at-bat to bring the score to 4-2. Erro made it a one-run contest with a RBI-single to left in the following at-bat.
The Cougars added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-3.
Kelly led off the bottom of the sixth inning by taking a pitch over the right field fence. The solo shot was his first-career home run and brought the 'Cats within a pair, 6-4.
Chicago State added a run in the top of the seventh, but Kaplan's three-run home run in the bottom half of the frame evened the score at 7-7.
Back-to-back singles by Erro and Claeys and an intentional walk of Willie Bourbon loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. With one away, Maxwell singled to right field to score Erro and put Northwestern in front, 8-7.
Ben Dickey gave Northwestern an insurance run in the next at-bat via a sacrifice fly to right field.
Levy worked a three up, three down top of the ninth to give Northwestern the win.
Ryan Bader struck out four in 3.2 innings and Tyler Lass also fanned four in 2.1 innings. Northwestern's pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow with at Western Michigan. First pitch against the Broncos is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
