Pagliarini Strikes Out Eight, Michigan Takes the Series

4/8/2018 4:51:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern came out on the wrong side of a back-and-forth contest against Michigan in the series finale as the Wolverines broke open a tie ballgame in the top of the ninth with four runs to go on and win, 7-3, Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern falls to 8-17 on the campaign and 1-8 in league action. Michigan improves to 19-11 on the season and 6-0 in league play.

Jeff Criswell (3-1) was credited with the win after throwing 2.0 innings of relief. Richard Fordon took the loss (1-2), throwing 2.0 innings and allowing two runs, while fanning a pair.

After walking the first batter of the game, Jack Pagliarini proceeded to strikeout the next five batters. The rookie finished with 4.1 innings pitched, eight strikeouts, two hits, one run in 20 batters faced.

Northwestern jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Jack Dunn walked with two away and proceeded to steal second to set up Alex Erro, who singled through the right side to score Dunn.

Casey O'Laughlin added to the #B1GCats lead in the bottom half of the fourth with a RBI to put NU in front, 2-0.

The Wolverines answered in the top of the fifth, touching home on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless bottom fifth for Northwestern, Michigan took its first lead of the day, 3-2, in the top of the sixth when a pair of runs came home on a bases-loaded error.

Claeys answered the bell and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when he blasted a solo shot over the right field fence. The home run was his fifth of the season and he has now homered in all three Big Ten series this season.

Michigan's Dominic Clementi pinch hit in the top of the ninth with runners on second and first and one away. Clementi took a pitch off Reimer down the left field line for a triple to score both runners and put the Wolverines in front, 5-3.  Following the triple, a Franklin RBI single and Keener RBI double to open Michigan's lead up to 7-3.

Northwestern returns to action on Wednesday, April 11, when it heads to Notre Dame for a 5:05 p.m. CT first pitch.
