Solid Pitching Stifles Notre Dame, 'Cats Shutout Irish

4/11/2018 8:57:00 PM | Baseball

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Northwestern led from start to finish as the Wildcats picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Notre Dame Wednesday night in nonconference action.

Seven Northwestern pitchers combined to keep the Fighting Irish off the scoreboard. First year Anthony Alepra made his collegiate debut and struck out two in the fifth inning to get credited with the win. Matt Gannon started for NU and tossed 3.0-scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Richard Fordon picked up his second save of the season.

Northwestern (9-17) outhit Notre Dame (14-19) by a 7-5 margin.

Jack Claeys and Leo Kaplan led the way at the dish, both going 2-for-4 on the night. It was Claeys' fifth multi-hit game of the season and the senior picked up his 17th RBI in the top of the first. Kaplan swiped three bases in the contest.

On the evening, Northwestern stole six bases. It was the third time this season that the Wildcats have stolen six bags in a game.

Jack Dunn singled in the top of the first inning and stole second base to get into scoring position. After Alex Erro advanced Dunn to third on a ground ball and Willie Bourbon walked, Claeys singled through the right side to score Dunn from third.

The Wildcats added to their lead on the top of the second. Kaplan had a lead-off single through the left side and proceeded to swipe second base. Casey O'Laughlin came up two batters later and, with Kaplan on third, hit a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Notre Dame's best chance to get on the board came in the bottom of the seventh. The Irish put runners on second and third with no outs. Senior Tommy Bordignon forced three consecutive groundouts to get out of the jam and preserve the shutout.

Northwestern and Notre Dame will meet at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on May 15 at 3:30 p.m. CT.

The Wildcats return to Big Ten action this weekend when they head to battle No. 10 Indiana in a three-game set.
