Northwestern Completes Sweep at Penn State

4/29/2018 3:53:00 PM | Baseball

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Northwestern baseball completed the series sweep with a 6-3 victory over Penn State on Sunday.

Northwestern (13-24, 4-14 B1G) brought the bats to the ballpark, outhitting the Nittany Lions by a 9-4 margin. Penn State dropped to 9-28 overall and 1-17 against Big Ten play.

Anthony Alepra was credited with the win after pitching 4.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run and four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Tommy Bordignon threw a pair of hitless innings to pick up the save.

Jack Claeys led the 'Cats at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance and two RBI. Jack Dunn went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while Ben Dickey also tallied a multi-hit game with a pair of knocks and a RBI. Alex Erro went 1-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.

The Wildcats got on the board early when Claeys singled to right in the top of the first to score Dunn and make it a 1-0 ballgame.

After Penn State tied the game in the bottom of the second, Erro put the 'Cats back in front with a double in the top of the third that scored Dunn. Claeys added to the lead in the next at-bat with a double of his own to right center that scored Erro to push NU's lead to 3-1.

Penn State scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-2 game, but that is as close as the Nittany Lions would come to catching the 'Cats.

Northwestern scored three runs in the top of the fifth, two of which came from bases-loaded walks and one on a Leo Kaplan sacrifice fly to center.

The Nittany Lions added one more in the seventh, which lead to a 6-3 final.

Northwestern hosts Chicago State at Miller Park on Tuesday, May 1, before heading to Western Michigan on Wednesday, May 2. The Wildcats return to Big Ten play next weekend at Purdue.
