STATE COLLLEGE, Pa. – Northwestern used two furious late rallies to take game one and two against Penn State on the road on Saturday.
Game one started Friday night and was halted in the bottom of the eighth inning due to rain, with the Wildcats trailing 6-4. After play resumed Saturday, the 'Cats scored three runs in the top of the ninth and went on to win, 7-6.
In game two, Northwestern trailed 7-2 heading into the eighth inning, but scored six runs in the eighth en route to an 8-7 win.
Sophomore Charlie Maxwell turned in the best two-game stretch of his career, going 5-10 with six RBI, including three doubles, a triple, and a three-run home run.
Jack Dunn continued his strong junior season and went 4-10 though the two games out of the leadoff spot.
In game one, Connor Lind went 3-5 with two RBI and Ben Dickey went 3-4. Jack Claeys, Casey O'Laughlin, Maxwell and Dunn all had two hits.
In game two, the top of the lineup delivered, with Dunn, Alex Erro and Willie Bourbon all tallying two hits apiece. Dunn picked up an RBI and Bourbon notched two.
First year Quinn Lavelle threw a quality start in the first game, going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs while striking out two. Sophomore Matt Gannon turned in a scoreless appearance out of the pen, recording the last five outs on Saturday to earn the win, his second of the season.
Hank Christie started game two and threw four innings. Danny Katz was credited with the win for his 2.1 innings of work, and senior Rich Fordon earned his third save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth.
The Wildcats finished the day at 12-24 and picked up wins number two and three in the Big Ten.
Northwestern started game one on the right foot, scoring in the top of the second. Maxwell doubled down the right field line and Connor Lind brought him home to make it 1-0.
Penn State responded and tied it up, but NU went ahead again and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Lind smashed a double off the wall and eventually was scored by Leo Kaplan.
The Nittany Lions' offense woke up and built a 6-2 lead heading into the eighth. Northwestern finally responded when Bourbon reached on an error and Claeys doubled. Maxwell and Lind used productive ground outs to cut the lead to 6-4 before rain postponed the game's conclusion to Saturday.
Gannon got out of the eighth after the restart and Northwestern had three outs left to salvage the game. O'Laughlin and Dunn got aboard with back-to-back singles and Claeys lined a single back up the middle to make it 6-5. Maxwell displayed his heroics for the first time on the day with a two-run triple to the warning track in center field that catapulted Northwestern into a 7-6 lead. Gannon came back out and finished the game off with a scoreless ninth.
Penn State kept Northwestern at bay for most of game two, scoring first in the second and working a 4-0 lead after five innings. The 'Cats got on the board in the sixth with an Erro single, a Bourbon single, a wild pitch, and a groundout from Claeys to make it 4-1.
Penn State pushed the lead back out to 5-1, but NU got one back after Jack Kelly pinch hit a single to right field. Dunn singled him to second, and the first year scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Nittany Lions kept their foot on the gas and scored two more to make it 7-2 before the eighth inning. Claeys and Lind singled before Maxwell turned the whole game around with a three-run blast to right field, shrinking the lead to 7-5.
The floodgates opened up for the Wildcat offense, and Kelly, Dunn and Erro loaded the bases with one out. Bourbon smacked a single into right field to bring two runners home, and the 'Cats completed their comeback, seizing an 8-7 lead.
Katz came through with a scoreless frame in the eighth and Fordon rounded off a dramatic day with two strikeouts for the save in the ninth.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action tomorrow, when they look for the sweep on the road against Penn State. First pitch is set for noon.
