EVANSTON, Ill. — A Big Ten regular season championship will be on the line when No. 7 Northwestern travels to No. 3 Maryland for a national televised contest on the Big Ten Network Thursday night. The Wildcats and Terrapins enter the contest tied atop the Big Ten standings with perfect 5-0 marks in conference play. The two teams will be meeting for the 21st time in program history and the seventh time as conference foes.
The Wildcats have won eight straight games to post their longest winning streak since 2012 when they won their seventh national title. The 'Cats are averaging 16.1 goals per game during the stretch while holding their opponents to just 9.25 goal per contest.
NU is coming off a 19-7 win over Rutgers at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium in which senior Shelby Fredericks dished out a career-high nine assists to finish just one shy of the program record and two shy of the NCAA single-game record. The contest marked the Wildcats' fifth game of the season in which they scored 19-plus goals.
Fredericks is on the precipice of becoming Northwestern's all-time leader in draw controls. The nation's active leader with 463, Fredericks needs just seven draw controls versus Maryland to break Alyssa Leonard's NU record of 469. The Long Island native is second in the country this season, averaging 8.58 draw controls per contest.
With four goals versus Rutgers, senior midfielder Sheila Nesselbush became the 16th Wildcat since 2002 to reach 100 career goals. She has a career-high 41 this season.
