Brookes, Seidman Win in Straight Sets in 'Cats' Regular Season Finale

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern closed out the regular season with a hard-fought match against Wisconsin Sunday afternoon that came down to the final two singles matches.

Playing outdoors at Vandy Christie Tennis Center, the contest was intense from the start. At one point in doubles play, all three matchups were tied at 4-4. At No. 3, Antonioni Fasano and Chris Ephron took their set, 6-4, but the Badgers pulled off a win by the same score at No. 2. In an exciting set at No. 1, Dominik Stary and Ben Vandixhorn went to a tiebreaker against the No. 7 doubles team in the nation, but the visitors came away with a narrow victory to take the first team point of the match.

In singles play, Jason Seidman wasted no time in getting NU on the board. The junior, playing at the No. 4 spot in the lineup, won 6-2, 6-1 and tied the match at one apiece. UW then briefly retook the lead with a win at No. 5 before the hosts would go on to tie it once again.

First year Nick Brookes—facing off against the only nationally-ranked singles player for either team—put on an impressive performance, dismantling Josef Dodridge 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. Brookes increased his team-leading win total to 10 on the year with the victory.

With three singles matchups remaining, the match was still very much in the balance, as all three contests went to a third set. Wisconsin eventually triumphed in close decisions in all three to make the final score 5-2 on the afternoon.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will now begin preparing for the 2018 Big Ten Championships, which will take place on the campus of the University of Iowa from April 26-29.
