Northwestern Wraps Up Michigan State Series

EVANSTON, Ill. — Willie Bourbon dove in a team-high three runs, but Northwestern fell to Michigan State, 6-5, in Sunday's series finale.
The Wildcats drop o 9-24 overall and 1-14 in league action, while Michigan State sits at 14-21 on the season and 6-5 in the Big Ten.
Jake Lowry (2-2) picked up the win for MSU and Riley McCauley earned his second save of the year. Richard Fordon was credited with the loss.
Bourbon finished 2-for-3 at the dish with a home run and a single and Charlie Maxwell posted a 2-for-4 performance with a solo shot and a single. Jack Dunn tallied a game-high three hits.
Michigan State jumped on Northwestern early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Jack Pagliarini settled in after the first frame and proceeded to retire the final 15 batters he faced in order. The rookie left-hander matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Claeys got the Wildcats on the board in the bottom of the third with a single to right field that scored Alex Erro from second.
Northwestern cut into Michigan State's lead again in the bottom of the sixth when Bourbon and Maxwell each had solo home runs over the right field fence. Bourbon collected his fifth home run of the season, while Maxwell tallied his first career home run.
Bourbon struck again in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Bourbon one-hopped the left field fence to score a pair of runners and give Northwestern its first lead of the game, 5-4.
Michigan regained the lead in the top of the eighth when Zack McGuire blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence.
Northwestern returns to action on Tuesday, April 24, when it travels to UIC for a 6 p.m. CT contest.
