Northwestern Shuts Out UIC, 1-0

CHICAGO – Northwestern shutout UIC, 1-0, in a defensive battle Tuesday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago.
Ryan Bader, Matt Gannon, Tyler Lass, Anthony Alepra, Sam Lawrence, Josh Levy and Tommy Bordignon combined for the seven-man shutout. Bader started and tossed 3.0 innings, while striking out two. Tommy Bordignon closed out the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
This is the second game this season the 'Cats have used seven pitchers and allowed no runs, the other being a 2-0 win over Notre Dame on April 24. The team's first shutout this year came in a 4-0 win over Maryland.
Jack Dunn knocked in the lone run of the game with a single in the fifth inning to score Ben Dickey. Dunn finished 2-for-4 on the night with a walk for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. Willie Bourbon also went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Northwestern improved to 10-24 on the season.
In the first inning, the Wildcats established the theme for the day with an inning-ending double play on a line out to Dunn and a tag out by Bourbon to escape a jam with runners on the corners.
Gannon came in for the fourth inning and had runners on the corners to deal with as well, but recorded a groundout to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Dickey reached first with one out thanks to an error from the UIC shortstop. He stole second and after an O'Laughlin walk, took third for his tenth stolen base on the season, the third-highest mark on the team. Dunn brought him home to plate the only run of the contest.
The Wildcats escaped yet another jam in the seventh. Lawrence earned the first two outs but left two runners on for Levy, who forced a grounder to Bourbon to keep the hosts scoreless.
Northwestern loaded the bases in the eighth, but couldn't capitalize. UIC got a runner to third with a triple in the bottom half of the frame, but Levy kept the levee from breaking with a fly-out to send it to ninth.
The win is the first against the Flames since April, 22, 2015, when NU won, 6-4, at home with current senior Jack Claeys knocking in two RBI as a first year. The last win at Granderson Stadium came earlier that year in a 4-3 victory when Tommy Bordignon threw a scoreless inning of relief and then-sophomore Joe Hoscheit earned the win as a pitcher.
Chicago's Big Ten team is back in action this weekend for a three-game series on the road at Penn State. First pitch on Friday is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
