EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Big Ten foe Rutgers at noon. The Wildcats enter Saturday's game riding a seven-game winning streak, their longest since 2012, and are a perfect 4-0 in Big Ten play.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 7 in the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse Media polls with a 12-3 record overall. The 'Cats are currently a half game behind Maryland in the Big Ten standings and can set up a undefeated showdown versus the Terrapins in the regular season finale with a win Saturday over the Scarlet Knights.
The 'Cats are a perfect 10-0 all time versus the Knights and have outscored them, 170-45. Last season, NU traveled to Piscataway, New Jersey, to claim a 14-7 victory.
Senior midfielder Sheila Nesselbush was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks on Tuesday. Nesselbush shared the honor with Maryland's Megan Whittle after scoring four goals and dishing out two assists in a win at No. 17 Penn State, tying her career highs in points and assists.
First-year midfielder Jill Girardi also earned Big Ten honors on Tuesday, being named the conference's Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career. Girardi recorded her first career hat trick and had a season-high two draw controls in the win over the Nittany Lions. She has scored a goal in back-to-back games.
Senior attack Shelby Fredericks is just 15 draw controls shy of tying Alyssa Leonard's program record. Fredericks is the nation's active leader in draw controls with 454.
