'Cats Aim For Crown At Big Ten Championships

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – No. 10 Northwestern takes aim at a Conference crown this weekend in southern Ohio at the 2018 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship, hosted for the second consecutive year at TPC River's Bend (Par-72; 6,357 yards). Head coach Emily Fletcher and the 'Cats have won three titles in the last five years, including back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016.

Six Big Ten teams are ranked among the nation's Top-50 according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings. Northwestern leads the way at No. 10, followed by No. 11 Michigan State, No. 22 Illinois, No. 31 Purdue, No. 37 Wisconsin and No. 46 Ohio State.
 
Friday's opening round has been delayed 90-minutes from originally scheduled tee times due to frost concerns. Northwestern will get underway at 11:48 a.m. ET, paired with Michigan State and Illinois. Monica Matsubara will get things started for the 'Cats, followed (in nine-minute increments) by Brooke Riley, Janet Mao, Stephanie Lau, Sarah Cho and Hannah Kim.
 
Last year, the Wildcats placed five in the Top-16 individually and finished runners-up by two strokes to Michigan State. Lau, now a junior, finished tied for fifth to lead the 'Cats last year, after a T4 result in her Big Ten Championships debut in 2016.
 
Hannah Kim, the two-time Mary Fossum Award winner and a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, has yet to finish outside the Top-12 in this event in her career. The senior was T9 in both 2015 and 2016, and finished in a tie for 12th last year. Classmate Sarah Cho won the Big Ten Individual Championship in her 2015 debut, and finished T12 last year as well.
 
BTN will debut coverage of the Big Ten Women's Golf Championships on Monday, April 30, at 5 p.m. ET.
 
TPC River's Bend was named by Golf Digest among the "Top 10 Best New Private Clubs in the U.S." after it opened in 2001. The Arnold Palmer-designed course also has been recognized as one of Ohio's Best Courses in State by Golf Digest in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2016.
 
The facility has previously hosted the Web.com Tour's Chiquita Classic, the PGA TOUR Champions Kroger Classic, and the Junior PGA Championship.Complementing the golf course is an expansive, 12-acre practice facility featuring multiple chipping and putting areas.
