Seven in a Row: ’Cats Take Down No. 17 PSU on the Road, 17-13

4/14/2018 9:12:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The winning streak has reached seven in a row.

The seventh-ranked Northwestern lacrosse program improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play with its seventh-straight win Saturday evening, taking down No. 17 Penn State on the road, 17-13.

The Wildcats had five players score at least two goals, led by senior Sheila Nesselbush's four. She added two assists to match her career high with six points for the second time this season. Junior Holly Korn and first-year Jill Girardi each recorded a hat trick, while senior Danita Stroup and junior Selena Lasota each scored two goals.

Lasota added two assists to finish with four points, moving into the top 10 all time in NU history. The Campbell River, British Columbia, native moved past Aly Josephs (208; 2004-07) and Meredith Frank (210; 2006-09) into eighth with 211 career points.

Senior Shelby Fredericks continued to shine as the team's leading distributor, dishing out a team-high three assists and scoring a goal to finish with four points. With her three helpers, Fredericks moved past Hilary Bowen (80; 2006-09) into fifth with 83 career assists. She also had a game-high eight controls to move within 13 of Alyssa Leonard's program record of 469.

Redshirt first-year goalkeeper Julie Krupnick made 10 saves in the first half alone and finished with 13, marking her sixth double-digit performance of the season.

The 'Cats got on the board first when Lasota found a cutting Nesselbush in front of the crease just 1:59 into the contest, but the Nittany Lions responded with a free-position goal by Katie O'Donnell just 33 seconds later to tie the game. Korn and Girardi scored back-to-back goals within 42 seconds to push the lead to 3-1, but a goal by Madison Carter with 21:18 left in the first half cut the lead to one, 3-2.

Chicago's Big Ten Team held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the next 10 minutes while reeling off four-straight goals to build a 7-3 advantage. Lasota scored her first of the game and Stroup followed with a goal of her own on an assist from Fredericks at the 15:22 mark. Fredericks got in on the scoring a minute later and sophomore Megan Kinna capped the run on an assist from Nesselbush just 14 seconds later.

Penn State scored four of the next five to cut it to a two-goal game, but the Wildcats responded with two of the final three goals before the half, including a shot from Stroup as time expired to give them a 10-7 lead.

Nesselbush scored her third of the game just 52 seconds into the second half to push the lead to four, 11-7, and Lasota's second goal of the held the four-game cushion in tact. The Nittany Lions wouldn't go away however, scoring three unanswered to cut the deficit to just one goal with 12:55 remaining, 13-12.

The Nittany Lions goal with 12:55 remaining came in a player up advantage and the 'Cats were called for a green card for a delay of game, giving them the ball back. The 'Cats made a huge stop on the defensive end to kill the advantage however, and responded with a 4-0 run to put the game away,

Korn and Girardi each completed their hat tricks during the run and senior Nicole Beardsley capped the Wildcats' scoring with her 11th goal of the season on an assist from Nesselbush.

The Wildcats held an 18-13 advantage in the draw circle thanks to Fredericks' eight and a career-high four by sophomore Lindsey McKone. Senior defender Lindsay Darrell led the way with two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Nesselbush and Krupnick each had three ground balls apiece.

Northwestern will put its seven-game winning streak and unbeaten Big Ten record on the line in its regular-season home finale next Saturday, April 21 versus Rutgers. Game time is scheduled for noon.
