EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 12 Northwestern closes out the home portion of its regular season this weekend as it host Wisconsin on Saturday and Minnesota on Sunday at Combe Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m. both days.
The Wildcats (15-4, 7-0 B1G) will honor their three seniors -- Alex Chatt, Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp -- during Sunday's regular-season home finale against the Golden Gophers.
Northwestern enters play this weekend all alone in first place in the Big Ten after pulling out a pair of 4-3 road wins at Michigan State and Michigan last weekend. Last Sunday's matchup against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor was a battle of undefeated conference teams but the Wildcats prevailed in the end thanks to a victory by Chatt in a third-set tiebreak.
With two victories this weekend, NU would take a step closer to earning its first Big Ten regular-season title since 2012. Northwestern won a Big Ten regular season and/or conference title 16 straight years from 1999-2014. Lipp is the lone current Wildcat to win a conference crown as she was a first-year member of the 2014 squad that won the league tournament crown.
Northwestern is one game up in the loss column over Michigan and two games over Illinois. The Wildcats already have beaten both teams on the road this season. NU wraps up its regular season at Penn State and Ohio State next weekend.
The 'Cats are led by a strong doubles unit as Larner and Lipp pair up for a No. 4 national ranking, while Chatt and Lee Or are ranked No. 25 this week. In singles, Larner is up to a career-best No. 35 ranking while Lipp comes in at No. 68.
Wisconsin enters Saturday's match with an 8-11 overall mark and a 2-5 record in Big Ten play, while Minnesota heads into Friday's match at Illinois with a 13-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Big Ten. Northwestern is 39-11 all-time against Wisconsin and has won the last 21 matches against the Badgers dating back to the 1997-98 season. Northwestern leads its all-time series with Minnesota, 39-5, and has won the last 14 consecutive matches against the Golden Gophers.
