EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 12 Northwestern took another step closer towards claiming a Big Ten regular-season title Saturday, taking down Wisconsin, 7-0, at Combe Tennis Center.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 16-4 overall and 8-0 in Big Ten play. NU holds a one-game lead over second-place Michigan -- whom the 'Cats defeated last Sunday -- with three matches remaining.
Northwestern got a challenge from the Badgers in doubles play, but the hosts were able to pick up the necessary two wins to take a 1-0 lead in the match. One showdown where the 'Cats didn't have any trouble was at No. 2 where the 25th-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Lee Or rolled to a 6-0 blanking.
Things weren't as easy at the other two matches which ended up finishing simultaneously. Wisconsin was able to finish off a 6-3 win at No. 3 as the fourth-ranked duo of Maddie Lipp and Erin Larner shook off a slow start to close out a 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Northwestern had little trouble with the Badgers in singles play, dropping only one set, including winning all six first sets.
Julie Byrne was dominant at No. 4, dropping only two games in earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Or and Larner clinched the match for NU with victories within seconds of one another at Nos. 3 and 1, respectively. Or earned a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Larner rallied back from dropping the first three games to win 12 of the next 14 in notching a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
Maddie Lipp added a straight-sets win of her own at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-1 to make it 5-0. Wisconsin played Northwestern close at Nos. 5 and 6, but the hosts got wins from Inci Ogut (7-6, 7-5) and Chatt (6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (4)) to blank the Badgers.
Northwestern closes out the home portion of its regular season Sunday when it squares off against Minnesota on Senior Day. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at Combe Tennis Center.
