SARAH FILBY SHINES AT JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

EVANSTON, Ill. – First-year fencer Sarah Filby continued her strong 2017-18 campaign by competing for Team Canada at the Junior World Championships, held in Verona, Italy, April 1-9.
 
Seeded 47th in the U20 foil competition, Filby went a perfect 6-0 in pool play. The Toronto native defeated opponents from Algeria, Germany, India, Hong Kong, Morocco, and Romania to advance to the elimination bracket.
 
As the No. 8 seed, Filby received a first-round bye. She then defeated Arantza Inostroza from Chile, 15-10, to advance to the Round of 32.
 
Facing 25-seed Serena Rossini from the host country Italy, Filby bowed out in a 15-7 defeat in the Round of 32.
 
In team play, 12-seed Canada defeated 21-seed Philippines, 45-21 in the first round of foil competition. In the Round of 16, France defeated Canada, 40-32. Filby outscored her opponents, 33-21, en route to a 4-2 record in the two rounds. Team Canada finished ninth overall.
 
Filby's solid showing at the Junior World Championships rounds out a successful first-year campaign, which saw her post a 37-11 (.771) record and a second-place finish at the MFC Championships.
