EVANSTON, Ill. – Former Northwestern men's tennis player Strong Kirchheimer reached the finals of the Futures de Gatineau tournament on the International Tennis Federation circuit this past weekend.
The 2017 graduate, who is NU's all-time winningest player combined between singles and doubles, won consecutive matches to advance out of the qualifying draw. In the main draw, he won each of his next four matches to reach the championship.
In the first round, Kirchheimer took down Joris De Loore of Belgium, who is ranked 315 in the world, and was ranked as high as 174 in 2016 . He followed it up with a win over fellow American Ronnie Schneider, who currently slots in at 491. In the quarterfinals, Kirchheimer's opponent was Danny Thomas (756), and in the semifinals, he faced Florian Lakat (757). The former Wildcat dispatched both in straight sets.
At Northwestern, Kirchheimer had an impressive career record of 105-35 in singles, making him the fifth player in Northwestern history to reach 100 wins in a career. He also ranks second in program history in career winning percentage at .754. Kirchheimer also broke Northwestern's career doubles wins record, finishing with 72.
Kirchheimer is set to take part in the Sherbrooke Futures event, taking place from March 5 to March 11. He has been accepted straight into the main draw, and will take on Alejandro Gomez of Colombia in the round of 32.
