Northwestern Drops Extra-Inning Contest at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Jack Claeys went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI, but Maryland rallied to top Northwestern, 6-5, in 10 innings on a walk-off walk Saturday afternoon.
Northwestern (8-13, 1-4 B1G) outhit the Terrapins, 11-8, on the afternoon. Eight of the nine Northwestern players reached base. Jack Dunn and Alex Erro each tallied a pair of hits, while Kyle Burnett, Jr., notched his second RBI of the series on a single.
The win was Maryland's first in league action.
The Wildcats used five pitchers in the outing. Ryan Bader went a team-long 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out a pair. Tommy Bordignon threw 2.1 innings of relief and fanned a pair.
Northwestern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a home run from Claeys that sailed over the center field fence. Maryland answered the bell in the bottom half of its inning by scoring a pair to make it a 3-2 contest.
Kyle Burnett, Jr. singled through the left side in the top of the second inning to score Ben Dickey from second base. The RBI was Burnett's second of the series, putting the 'Cats in front, 4-2.
Will Watson blasted a home run in the bottom of the second to cut into Northwestern's lead, 4-3.
Claeys blasted his second home run of the game in the top of the third to extend NU's lead, 5-3. It was Claeys' fourth home run in the last five games.
Maryland made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh when AJ Lee singled to right field to score Nick Dunn and push it to a 5-4 ballgame.
The Terrapins tied it in the bottom of the eighth on a 6-4-3 double play that brought a run in from third to make it 5-5.
Maryland loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th and drew a walk from Josh Levy to win the game.
The rubber match will take place tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.
